class descriptions

Lindy Hop Level 1 (Beginners)

Our 6-week Level 1 course is aimed at absolute beginners with no previous dancing experience. It introduces the core figures and rhythms of Lindy Hop, including the basic 6 count, 8 count, and charleston based moves. Repetition and practice are the key, and it takes at least 2 blocks to master the entire beginners currriculum, although most students do 3 or 4 Level 1 blocks before moving up.

Lindy Hop Level 2 (Beginners Intermediate)

Level 2 continues to work on the basic principles, focussing on concepts such as connection, frame, leading / following, and listening to the music. We also introduce the next set of classic "must know" moves. In order to move up to Level 2 you must have completed two Level 1 blocks or equivalent (preferably more) and must be comfortable freestyling a charleston, swing out, and lindy circle. At this level, incorporating some social dancing into your week also becomes more important!

Lindy Hop Level 2+ (Intermediate)

Level 2+ is where the fun really begins! It assumes a working knowledge of the basic moves and principles (although we do continue to consolidate these of course!), and adds a wider repertoire of cool new moves to really enhance your social dancing. Typically students will have been doing Level 2 and social dancing for 6+ months before moving up.

Lindy Hop Level 3 (Intermediate Plus)

This kick-ass take-no-prisoners class is aimed at people who are seriously addicted to swing and really want to take their dancing to the next level :) Technique, cool new moves, musicality, improvisation, you name it, we cover it all !! Please note that as this is "controlled entry" you will be invited to move up when appropriate - so start impressing us on that dance floor!

Balboa Level 1

In this course we introduce you to the basic Pure Bal and Bal Swing moves and concepts. As Balboa is a technical dance, progress is a little slower and it will usually take at least 4 blocks to get a handle on the essentials and be comfortable dancing at the higher speeds at which Balboa is typically danced. This is a great addition to your general repertoire and we encourage all students to take this on once they are feeling a bit more comfortable with Lindy Hop.

Balboa Level 2

This is also a controlled entry class, and once we feel you have mastered the Pure Bal essentials (uphold and downhold basics, scoots, walks, paddles, crabwalks and breakturn), and the Bal Swing essentials (transition step, crossovers, throw out, pop turn and lollies) we will let you know!

Blues Level 1

We are finally introducing Blues dancing for the first time this year, so these introductory classes are open to all levels, and will cover the basic concepts of blues movement, connection, musicality, and moves. Don't be shy - come and try it!

special classes & workshops

In addition to the traditional Savoy Style lindy hop which is our major focus, we aim to broaden your dance horizon by also teaching a number of different dances or styles that fall under the 'swing' umbrella:

1920's Charleston
Balboa
Blues
Swing Rueda
Jazz Routines:

The Shim Sham
The Jitterbug Stroll
The Madison
The Big Apple
The Tranky Doo
